108 poems of the breath
108 poems of the Breath is a series of visual poems that began as posts on Instagram in 2015. It is an ongoing project which has spanned many more years than expected. Begun before IG Reels was introduced, it was mostly an experiment in digital, poetic video making on a specific platform (in this case, Instagram). Some have sound. Some don’t. There are variations in video quality (as phone cameras evolve) and length (as the number of breaths taken varies). The series is only accessible via this IG page or by searching the hashtag #108poemsofthebreath , though all won’t populate there. Each poem documents the breathing 4 “box breaths” (a deep breathing technique that involves inhaling for 4 seconds, holding the breath for 2 seconds, exhaling for 4 seconds, and holding again for 2 seconds) while filming something that has inspired a break to practice such breathing. It seems fitting and very tai chi -like that the series has taken so long to unfold. I have been the fortunate student of Master Bob Cummings and Michelle Semet, both amazing instructors of Tai Chi Chuan (and the 108 form) and other martial arts.
